Moving a telephone extension point from one room to another.?

I need to drill a hole through an external cavity (insulated) wall to feed a telephone wire through. Can someone tell me how I should do this – what equipment do I need (drill/bit)? – do I drill inside out or outside in? – do I drill at an angle or straight? – do I need to put any type of sheathing around the wire? Anything else I should know??

(1) You need a masonry drill bit that is long enough to go right through the wall. For best (and easiest) results use it in a hammer drill, so make sure that the drill bit is suitable for hammer drills. If your desired hole is wider than approx. three-eighths of an inch (10 mm), you will find it easier to first of all drill a narrower (say, 5 mm) hole, because getting a large drill bit through brick or concrete is jolly hard work. Use top quality drill bits. Don’t skimp by getting cheap or already-used bits. (2) You should drill from the inside out, because that way you can ensure that the cable enters/leaves the house at exactly the right place. If you drill from the outside in, you can’t be certain that you’ll hit the right spot inside the house. Your drill might come out under the floor, for example, then you’ll have extra work. Unfortunately, drilling from the inside out often means that, when the drill breaks through on the outside, some of the outside face of the brick, stone, or whatever flakes off and has to be patched up in some way. If the cable comes out near the ground, maybe it won’t be noticeable. (3) You don’t really need to put any sheathing around the wire, providing that there’s no chance of the wire getting pulled and thus chafing on the inside of the hole. Don’t make the hole a tight fit for the wire, though. If you would feel happier about it, you could get some plastic tubing or pipe and feed the wire through it when you put the wire through the hole in the wall, but it might mean drilling a wider hole. (4) You should drill slightly downwards from inside the house, so that rain is less likely to run in. (5) Finally, if you’re running a telephone wire from one room to another, would it be easier to do it inside the building, rather than go outside?
If the wire won’t go easily through the hole, make a sort of big “needle” from a long piece of stiff wire. Bend it into an “eye” at one end, fix your wire to it and push it through the hole. Oh, and one last thing – buy about 50% more wire than you reckon you’ll need, to allow for going around corners, and so on. It’s better to have a couple of feet left over than to be six inches short.
